Why do people celebrate Valentine's Day?

Why do people wait for one day in a year to tell somebody "I love you"? Shouldn't they do it everyday, or do they need somebody (in the form of a specific day in the calendar) to push them to act? Why do they need to accummulate all their feelings and express it only on this particular day? Do other calendar days mean nothing, feelingwise? Shouldn't their partner's each day be filled with and coloured by the supreme human feeling called "love"? If they celebrate so intensely on the 14.02, will the 15th be "coming back to reality": doubts, lame excuses, deceits, broken plates, etc, etc, etc?

  1. One simple answer to all the above questions is money making! Its the industries pushing us with all their ads that this is the day so we stupid humans follow and buy and spend.....for what? Just for the sake of some guy (or girl) who invented this to make more money! Just on another hand a comment from my side to you Alex....I guess the houweholds that do the "broken plates" on the 15/02 won't even celebrate the 14th....hehehe!

  2. Sasha, Sasha.. It's like asking why men wait for March 8 to present women with flowers or for a new year to make resolutions. I don't think all people wait for Feb. 14 to tell someone "I love you." St. Valentine's Day is just a good day to worship love and romance, to underline something important. Is it bad? And I don't think it was invented by those who sell hearts and flowers, etc., business people just used it, well, why not? I think this holiday is mostly disliked by those who are not in love, by those who are single and might of course feel uncomfortable seeing all those sweet couples. Well of course they sometimes look ridiculous but still I believe the idea is nice. Two years ago our Belarusian movie and culture expert wrote an article on the subject. And although it is very critical, I love it: http://naviny.by/rubrics/opinion/2008/02/14/ic_articles_410_155536/
