Why do people drink?
What do people find in drinking? Is it a chance to forget about their depressing reality? To feel better and relaxed? To get loose and do things that they wouldn't do otherwise? What limits them to do these things when they donot drink? Is it the rules and norms in the society that heavily drinking people by-pass (when other people would say, "S/He was drunk, didn't realize what s/he was doing" - which can be deemed as an automatic forgiveness)? Wouldn't it be then an instance of avoiding responsibility for their actions, when they can do whatever they want but which won't be condemned? Why would they drink so much so that they won't be able to remember the previous night but still will call it "fun"?

I think we should differentiate between heavy drinking, social drinking and alcoholism. The latter is a disease. The first one happens sometimes if you are unable to control yourself. Like when you drink the first glass and start giggling and think why not drink a second one but after a third one you realize that maybe you shouldn't have done that but it's too late (the law of diminishing marginal utility :))))) Finally, social drinking is something harmless. People do it to relax a bit and socialize.
